OPG X-rays at Sunrise Dental Surgery

Sunrise Dental Surgery now offers OPG X-rays. An OPG, also called a panoramic dental X-ray, captures a single image of the upper and lower teeth, jaws and surrounding structures. Your dentist may recommend one when a broader view of your mouth could help with assessment or treatment planning.

What is an OPG X-ray?

OPG stands for orthopantomogram. It is a type of dental X-ray that shows the teeth and jaws in one panoramic image. Unlike a small intraoral X-ray, which focuses on a few teeth, an OPG provides a wider view.

What can an OPG X-ray help assess?

Bad breath is caused by poor dental health, or oral hygiene issues, but could also be due to the following:

  • dry mouth
  • smoking
  • stomach or kidney issues
  • post-natal conditions and
  • consuming certain foods
Solution

Depending on your needs, an OPG image may help your dentist assess:

  • The position and development of teeth, including wisdom teeth
  • The upper and lower jaws
  • Areas that may need closer examination
  • Information relevant to planning certain dental treatments

An OPG is one part of your dental assessment. Your dentist will interpret the image alongside your symptoms, examination and dental history.

What happens during an OPG X-ray?

An OPG scan is quick and non-invasive. You’ll be asked to stand or sit at the machine and position your chin on a support. The machine rotates around your head while taking the image. You’ll need to keep still briefly to help produce a clear scan. Our team will guide you through the process.

Do I need to prepare for an OPG X-ray?

Usually, no special preparation is needed. You may be asked to remove glasses, jewellery or other metal objects near your head and neck before the scan. Tell our team if you may be pregnant before any X-ray.

Is an OPG X-ray right for me?

Your dentist will recommend an OPG only when it may provide useful information for your care. The need for an X-ray depends on your individual situation. Your dentist can explain why it has been recommended and answer your questions.

OPG X-ray FAQs

Does an OPG X-ray hurt?

No. The scan is non-invasive and does not involve anything being placed inside your mouth. You’ll need to remain still while the machine takes the image.

How long does an OPG scan take?

The image is taken in a short scan. Your appointment may take longer to allow time for positioning and instructions.

Can an OPG show every dental problem?

No. An OPG provides a broad view, but it may not show every detail. Your dentist may recommend other examinations or imaging if more information is needed.

Is an OPG the same as a regular dental X-ray?

No. Small dental X-rays focus on specific teeth or areas. An OPG captures a panoramic view of both jaws and the teeth.
